The OR-LR-DR-HRPU, PACU & NICU Complex of Tarlac Medical Center consists of four (4) units that are highly specialized. They are the Operating Room, Post Anesthesia Care Unit, the Labor Room – Delivery Room, High Risk Pregnancy Unit and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Though these specialties are distinct from each other, their proximity to each other facilitates the effective and efficient delivery of services that each unit renders to their patient. The profile of each department/unit is discussed separately. In this manual, OR and PACU are combined.
The OPERATING ROOM is a highly specialized unit wherein operative procedures are performed on patients in a very sterile environment. The nurses have an important and unique role in assisting surgeons and anesthesiologist during these invasive procedures.
PACU is where the patient who had undergone surgery and still recovering from the given anesthetic are brought in. It is where monitoring of postoperative and post anaesthesia care are done before patients are transferred to another area in the hospital. Activities undertaken here include identification and immediate treatment of early surgical and anesthetic complication before they develop into deleterious consequences. It is therefore, imperative that the unit be manned by skilled medical and nursing personnel to optimize the safe recovery from both the surgery and anaesthesia.
